This modest 2600 square foot home was completely remodeled by Culbertson Durst, inspired by the relaxed formality of California Spanish Colonial Architecture. The design choices are dominated by the elimination of barriers between internal and external spaces. California’s moderate climate is uniquely suited to the inclusion of a 400 square foot outdoor cabana, bringing the natural gift of the perfect weather inside and enabling open year-round entertaining without sacrificing formality.
The design work features stone floors and the extensive use of traditionally carved wooden doors, moldings and windows, custom iron fixtures and hardware. Bringing the palette of the mountain/desert landscape into play, rich reds, greens, oranges and golds are highlighted with custom onyx, marble and granite surfaces. Crafted tiles in clay, metal and porcelain are also utilized throughout the residence.
Furnishings again take their inspiration from California Spanish Colonial period. The use of woven tapestries, fabrics, custom rugs all mirror the natural richness of the surrounding landscape. |
