We hired Jeff in 2000-2001 as the interior designer for our 15,000 sq. feet home. Although he had only done smaller homes before that, we found the creative expression he had demonstrated in those small homes compelling and wanted to give him a big canvas to express himself.
Jeff did an outstanding job of choosing the appropriate faux work, colors and paints throughout the house. He picked customized drapes, rugs, and furniture to match our home's size and proportions. He executed details on time and with constant dialogue with us to understand our tastes.
We are very pleased with the outcome and have been enjoying the pleasant environment he created for us. Thanks to his efforts, our home was selected as the best home, in its size category, by California Home Digest.
I worked with Jeff Culbertson of Culbertson Durst Interiors on a project in Miami Florida. Building a house from the ground up is a daunting task for anyone but throw in first timers and things can get really interesting. Jeff was a tremendous asset in supporting the build. He dove into the architectural plans making adjustments to optimize the space making it functional with a great flow to the layout. Jeff worked with the contractor and subcontractors making clear what was expected for his clients. The number of decisions required to complete this task is not for the faint of heart. Jeff was instrumental with interior accessories, landscaping, pool design and home automation. We (the clients) spent countless hours in his office selecting fabrics, and furnishings that capture our style. He is very pleasant to work with and has the skill set to make dreams come true for his clients. I look forward to working with him on our next project.
The design team at Culbertson Durst Interiors magically transformed our house from a 1980’s set piece into an updated, welcoming home that reflects our taste and vision, while at the same time honoring the inherent architectural style of the structure. In some areas we were starting from scratch, in others we were not, and it was by no means an easy task for them to integrate all of the many changes we were making into a cohesive visual package. To further complicate matters, the entire project had to be managed remotely, as we live most of the year outside the US. Culbertson Durst accomplished this for us, with patience, humor and aplomb. Whenever we had questions or concerns, the team was always “on it” and responded quickly and professionally. In addition, they have an impressive network of contractors that were also very responsive, professional and instrumental in keeping our behemoth of a remodeling project on track to completion. Kudos to Jeff and Jill!
We recently bought a Spanish Mediterranean style home in San Francisco with quite a bit more space than our previous Noe Valley row house and we were totally overwhelmed by the thought of trying to decorate it while staying true to its Spanish architecture. After sifting through dozens of designer websites and seeing the same mid-century modern portfolios, we finally found Culbertson Durst Interiors. They had the breadth and depth of design experience that we were looking for -- with a wide variety of decor expertise. They almost immediately tuned in to the styles we liked, accurately predicting our tastes and suggesting perfect pieces for our new home. They are also amazing to work with -- down to earth, easy to talk to, responsive even at the most random of times. We have very much enjoyed getting to know them both and having the opportunity to learn from their many years of experience. They are consummate professionals who always make sure their clients are not just happy, but thrilled, with their designs.
Imagine Jill's dilemma: to integrate two very opinionated people's opposite design ideas to make a warm and inviting home! I felt I should give her a referee's jersey during our first meeting, but as our design process proceeded and her understanding of our tastes and needs solidified, she developed a unique and personal look for us. Jill took the time to meet with us individually and together, so that she really heard each of us. We LOVE our new furniture and the dramatic yet tasteful first look when friends come into our entry way. Not many people really use their living rooms, but we do every day, because it is such a beautiful space. Her plans saved us an immense amount of time. She put together fabrics and design ideas ahead of time, gave us options, and kept us focused. We did not have an unlimited budget, yet Jill found us very high quality furnishings anyway. When I described a plaster wall finish I had seen in a restaurant, she knew exactly what I wanted and knew an artist who could create it. Our powder room now boasts this bronzed look, and is certainly a conversation opener. I never thought I needed an interior designer, but after working with an expert who is creative, thoughtful, and fun, there are not enough stars to select for Jill Durst.
I can’t say enough good things about Jeff. He is a great designer, listener, and all around good person. He also knows how to get quality results while staying within a budget.
On October 2014, we moved from NY to CA and I was looking for a designer and found Jeff on Houzz. The funny thing is that he actually helped design the house (I had no idea when I selected him from the plethora of designers on Houzz). I was impressed by his portfolio and his reviews and that’s why I decided to reach out to him (and I am still very happy with my decision).
Jeff is patient and he listens to his customers. When I didn’t like something, he didn’t make me feel uncomfortable by justifying why I didn’t like a certain item. Other designers that I have worked with, at times, would take offense and would probe for a reason for the dislike (at times I just didn’t like something but didn’t know why…it just didn’t feel right). Jeff did not and that made me comfortable. He also fixed things when something went wrong. It is inevitable when furnishing large homes that something will go wrong and here some things did, but Jeff fixed all the issues gracefully that in the end they became non-issues.
Jeff is an innovative designer. He helped bridge the gap between my home's current structure to my needs. My home is very traditional and I like traditional but wanted to bring some modernization/youth to the house. Jeff was able to marry the traditional and modern style and come up with the perfect blend. What was great is he worked with the existing structure and my existing furniture and made everything work beautifully.
I appreciate Jeff’s organization, attention to detail, patience, ability to stay within budget, and fix missteps. I would definitely use Jeff again and recommend him to anyone who is looking for a fantastic, kind, and patient designer.
We first hired Jeff and Jill to work with us during the construction of our vacation home. They were very involved throughout construction -- perhaps even more than they expected since the architect tragically passed away during the project. It's hard to imagine what we would have done without them. They were thoughtful, creative, and meticulous about how to design things in a way that suited how we expected to use the home. We were just thrilled with the final result. So much so, that we hired them again to work on our primary home. I think that says it all.
